Read Write Inc.
What's it all about?
The government are promoting the use of synthetic phonics when teaching early literacy skills to children. This just means being able to change a letter or a group of letters into sounds that can then be blended together into a word.
At Waunarlwydd Primary School we have begun to use parts of a programme called 'Read Write Inc' produced by Ruth Miskin. This is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics, blending them together to read and write words and using these learnt sounds in their reading and writing.
Using Read Write Inc the children learn to read easily so that they can put all their energy into understanding what they read.
It also allows them to spell more easily so that they can concentrate on thinking about the content of what they write.

What will they learn?
The children will be learning to read and write 44 sounds and their corresponding letters/ letter groups using simple picture prompts. They will also be learning to read and write words using sound blending (Fred Talk).
What can I do to help?
Help your child learn to read words by sound-blending (Fred talk) e.g. c-a-t = cat
Children learn to read words by blending the letter-sounds that we will be learning. (Click here to find out the order we will be learning the sounds)
Help children to say the sounds, as quickly as they can, and then to blend the sounds together to say the whole word.
Be sure to read regularly with your child and ensure your child returns their reading book every week. It is also important ro read a variety of books (fiction, non-fiction, rhymes…) at home. Talk about the different features of different books. Talk about the books and other reading materials that you have shared. Most importantly though, show how much fun it is to listen to stories and read lots of different texts e.g. cereal packets, shopping lists, road signs, web pages, magazines, newspapers etc.
